The Real Unreal
The Real Unreal is an exceptional project that I am teaching as a 5-week seminar at the USC School of Architecture. In the quest to understand what architecture is, we often encounter complex questions that do not have clear-cut answers. Thanks to recent technological advancements in computation, artificial intelligence, and VR/MR, the boundaries of architecture have become even more blurred. The project explores the fusion of Houdini and Unreal Engine 5, creating an imaginative reality that is both captivating and strange. Through the use of these advanced technologies, we challenge the limitations of conventional fabrication and construction. We create extremely intricate objects that are often seen as unreal or alien in our physical world. However, when we place them in a hyper-realistic virtual environment, they become almost tangible. This project aims to help us to see beyond the realm of possibilities and embrace the paradoxical nature of this new architecture. By combining the impossible with hyper-realism, we create an exciting and captivating reality that blurs the lines between what is real and what is not.
